The leather industry has a dilemma it hasn’t been able to shake roughly 1.4 billion animal hides being processed every year, tied to a livestock system that drives up to 80% of agricultural land use, and with it, deforestation on a global scale. The usual answer has been to look for a “vegan” alternative. But most of those alternatives are just PU or PVC in disguise, petroleum-based plastics that never biodegrade and quietly shed microplastics into the environment instead.
For years, that’s been the choice on the table: animal impact, or plastic pollution. It isn’t much of a choice at all. It’s a failure of imagination.
So we built a third option, not a substitute, but something genuinely new. We call it T-Rex Leather.
An Idea 68 Million Years in the Making
Rather than trying to out-engineer nature with more chemistry, we went looking in deep time. Using large language models, our science team reconstructed the missing pieces of a 68-million-year-old collagen sequence and then got living cells to actually produce it.
What came back was surprising: the reconstructed sequence carried nearly three times more of the lysine building blocks responsible for cross-linking than modern collagen. More cross-links mean a stronger material at the molecular level, straight out of the gate. By rediscovering a protein sequence lost to time, we unlocked a material capability that doesn’t exist anywhere in nature today.
Grown, Not Glued
Here’s where T-Rex Leather really breaks from both traditional leather and its plastic-based rivals: there are no plastic glues or binders holding it together. We give cells the precise biochemical cues they need to weave and cross-link the collagen themselves, inside an advanced tissue engineering platform.
The result is a material that’s 100% biological and fully biodegradable, because it’s built by cells, not bonded with plastic.
Scientists have been able to grow small patches of skin tissue in petri dishes for 50 years. What’s new is proving this can happen at scale: large, durable sheets of material, with a modular factory blueprint designed to reach 1 million square meters of leather a year within the next decade. This isn’t a labs curiosity it’s a platform built to push plastic-based “alternative leathers” out of the market entirely.
The Sustainability Mathematics
Growing an entire animal to harvest a fraction of its biomass is inherently inefficient. Growing cells means growing only the material you actually need and that efficiency compounds into real environmental savings.
Independent modelling by PA Consulting found that a scaled version of this process would use:
- 78% less water
- 87% lower carbon footprint
- Substantially less land
than traditional leather production.
Why a Handbag?
Lab-grown materials have long been dismissed by the industry as inferior imitations. To change that perception, we needed a proof of concept dramatic enough to be undeniable, so we made a handbag from 68-million-year-old, cell-grown collagen.
It worked. Interest from luxury brands wanting to work with the material increased tenfold, and the project picked up four Lions at Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity 2026 for its innovation and storytelling.
But the handbag was never the point. It’s proof of a biomanufacturing process, one that scales, and one aimed squarely at a global industry worth hundreds of billions of dollars.
Beyond the Bag
Because this collagen is engineered at the molecular level, it isn’t limited to handbags, or even to leather goods as we currently think of them. The same platform opens the door to tailored materials for automotive interiors, high-performance sportswear, and jewellery, lighter, stronger, and more consistent than anything grown the old way.
Those material properties ripple outward. Lighter aviation seats mean lighter planes, which means better fuel efficiency, a small example of how a molecular-level innovation in one material can shift outcomes in an entirely different industry.
The Real Story
This isn’t a sustainable product dressed up as a headline. It’s a 68-million-year-old collagen sequence, rediscovered through modern protein modelling and grown by cells instead of synthesised from plastic. We didn’t set out to make a sustainable leather and market it as remarkable, we set out to make the most remarkable leather possible, and it turned out to be the most sustainable one too.
